It may have been worse than we thought last year at U-S meatpacking plants. COVID-19 struck the facilities three times harder than early estimates suggested.
The House Subcommittee on Coronavirus Crises as seen by Reuters shows a survey of the major meatpackers put worker cases of the virus at over 59,000 with 269 of the infections proving fatal. A previous estimate used by government agencies counted just 22,694 COVID cases and 88 deaths. The latest revision shows JBS’s Hyrum, Utah and Tyson’s Amarillo, Texas beef plants employee sickness rate was around 50%.
Attention has now been turned to what are described as lax safety protocols at some of the plants with allegations of poor social distancing and the wearing of sweat saturated masks.
