KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Young people will be marching in the streets of Kalamazoo today, but it’s for a positive reason. Area youth are celebrating “Lights on After School Day”, promoting after-school programs for the children in the Kalamazoo community.
Kydnet Executive Director Meg Blinkiewicz says the marches will be held in various areas around town during the afternoon.
“The young people have made posters, lightbulbs and they will be marching in their neighborhoods to cheer and chant to bring awareness to the importance of keeping the lights on after school.”
After over a year of lost social experiences because of the pandemic, they hope this will help them recover some lost time and opportunities…
“Now more than ever it is so important to invest in after-school programs. We are diving into young people gaining those important social and emotional learning skills.”
Kydnet is an umbrella organization for 60 agencies and groups in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties. They provide activities to get kids off the streets and get them ready and directed toward healthy and productive adulthood. Both the city and county commissions have thrown support behind the effort.
