BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Six suspects are facing charges relating to an alleged dogfight in Battle Creek last month.
On Tuesday, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported that four men and two women face charges in the incident, which is said to have taken place on September 6 in the 200 block of Cliff Street.
Police say a large group of people were seen outside a home, and two of them were holding leashes for two pit bulls. One suspect told police that he had been walking his dog past the house when the other attacked.
However, police say no one was attempting to separate the dogs. Officers also seized video surveillance footage that showed the fight lasted about eight and a half minutes before officers showed up.
Police told the Enquirer that this is believed to be an isolated incident, and does not indicate a larger dogfighting organization.
No arrests have been made, but the department is currently looking to authorize charges against those involved. The Enquirer reports that dogfighting is punishable by up to four years in prison.
In addition, the four others may face charges of attending a dogfight, which carries the same sentence.
