PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Portage man accused of murdering his father, a retired oral surgeon, has been found incompetent to stand trial.
That’s according to MLive, who reported the update on Monday.
56-year-old Scott Sterffy was found incompetent on September 24 after being ordered to undergo an exam in late August.
Sterffy is accused of murdering Dr. Thomas Aye, his father, in late July.
Aye’s daughter told police that Sterffy has mental health issues, having been previously diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Sterffy had also been institutionalized while he was in his late teens. He alleged that he had been abused during his stay, of which he blamed Aye.
She noted that Sterffy stood to benefit from Aye’s estate, which she described as being “substantial.”
At this time, Sterffy remains in custody without bond. His case will be reviewed in November.
