Reports indicate farmers may be facing another fertilizer spike next season. Prices have been rising since November.
China’s ban on phosphate exports have resulted in higher prices this year. Growers are questioning if they can get by with less. Michigan State has come up with the Cost Comparison Tool enabling producers to measure nutrient needs with fertilizer product costs. While it doesn’t replace soil testing, it uses the information gleaned from testing to develop a fertilizer plan beginning with an intended yield goal.
Farmers may also looking at manure as a more affordable source of nutrients as manufactured fertilizers get more expensive.
