Small farmers who sell their products locally could be eligible for a new USDA crop insurance product coming out soon.
It’s called a micro-farm policy. The Risk Management Agency’s Acting Administrator Richard Flournoy says it will simplify record keeping and post-production costs such as washing to prepare for the market. In addition, it will cover value-added products like jam. Flournoy says the new policy was developed from research developed from the 2018 Farm Bill and includes feedback from producers, especially crop and organic growers.
Local crop insurance agents will soon have details on the micro-farm policy.
