KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Western Michigan hockey team jumped into the national rankings this week, climbing to No. 19 in the United States College Hockey Online Poll on Monday.
WMU swept rival Ferris State to open the season last weekend, winning 4-0 at Lawson Ice Arena and then coming from behind to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-3, at Ewigleben Arena on Saturday night.
The USCHO.com Poll consists of 40 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.
Western Michigan is just outside the top 15 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, receiving 28 points to sit unofficially 17th.
The 27th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
Western Michigan is off this week and resumes action next weekend with a home-and-home series against No. 3 Michigan.
