KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Five people were charged Monday related to an incident with police in Kalamazoo last week while a homeless encampment was being shut down. Charges include trespassing, resisting arrest, and assaulting police officers.
The people involved were protesters and not residents at the camp off Ampersee Ave., which is now vacated. Four police officers were injured during the clash involving at least seven people last Friday, which led to seven arrests.
Kalamazoo Police began efforts to shut down the camp on Wednesday, October 6, with virtually no notice ahead of time. Some residents had later returned, saying they had nowhere to go. Officials had issued a trespassing warning on Thursday saying that the area would be off-limits beginning at noon Friday. The police clash with protesters occurred not long after that noon deadline.
