BENTON HARBOR, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Residents in Benton Harbor are being urged to avoid drinking or cooking with tap water, due to high levels of lead contamination found in the city. The city will be giving people several opportunities this week to pick up free bottled water.
Data last week shows the lead readings from sampled homes in Benton Harbor were about 59 times higher than the state limit. On Sunday, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services announced new bottled water pick-up information, which will be part of a longer-term effort as officials work to fix the issue.
Free water will be given out across several locations, which we have provided below:
- Monday, Oct. 11: MDHHS Berrien County Office at 401 8th Street from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
- Tuesday, Oct. 12: Abundant Life Church of God at 693 Columbus Avenue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Wednesday, Oct. 13: Southwest Michigan Community Action Agency at 331 Miller Street from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
