KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A high-profile Michigan attorney is filing a lawsuit against the owner of the now-shuttered Lakeside Academy in Kalamazoo. The facility was thrust into the spotlight last year following the death of a teenage student at the hands of staff members there.
Attorney Geoffery Fieger says he’s filed a lawsuit, accusing Lakeside’s owner of abuse and preying on kids. The lawsuit calls for money damages for violations of constitutional rights in the death of 16-year-old Cornelius Fredericks. He died in May of 2020, nearly two days after several staff members had held him down after he threw a sandwich in the cafeteria.
Three people have been charged with the death and the state of Michigan ultimately shut down the facility for good. That lawsuit is seeking around $50 million dollars.
