LANSING, MI — Lansing area auto workers might be back to work at two mid-Michigan plants, but supply shortages of new cars persist. U.S. new car sales in September were way down, according to the latest data. In fact, sales of new autos dropped some 25% year-over-year.
Auto industry experts say the severe sales dip is mostly due to product supply shortages, which is not good for local car dealers or anyone shopping for a car right now.
Workers returned to GM’s Lansing Delta Township and Lansing Car Assembly production facility on Monday. The two plants were down most of the summer when production ceased due to the computer chip shortage. There are an estimated 4,000 GM employees in the Lansing region.
