While nationwide apple production is expected to be up this year overall production by state is expected to be spotty.
Number three apple producer Michigan is forecasting an 18% decrease in total production due to frost last spring and poor pollination caused by colder weather. The state of Washington is the top producer of apples and prospects are for a 7% increase in its crop for 2021 – however, triple digit temperatures last summer could reduce numbers once that crop is picked. Number two producer New York is expected to be down three percent. Making up for these lower numbers states like Pennsylvania, California and Oregon which all report likely production increases.
For producers higher tariffs in some markets and shipping tie-ups are applying downward pressure on prices.
