KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo police continue to investigate two weekend shootings, one of which resulted in a fatality.
The first shooting was reported early Saturday. An 18-year-old Portage resident was shot around 1:15 in the 100 block of East Belmont St.. Authorities say the victim later died at the hospital and their name has not been released.
Investigations led police to an area of Van Buren County later in the day. A 24-year-old man was taken into custody around 4:45 p.m.. The suspect is facing open murder charges and is being held in the Kalamazoo County Jail. His name has not been released. Police have not indicated any motive for the shooting.
The second shooting also happened early Saturday. A 19-year-old from mid-Michigan was injured but is recovering, after being shot at a business in Kalamazoo. Officers responded to the 1300 block of Ravine Rd around 3:30 a.m.. The victim, from Genesee County, had been shot in the face and was taken to a hospital by some friends.
Police are still looking for a suspect and anyone other witnesses who may have been in the area at the time. Currently, investigators have no reason for a motive in the shooting. Anyone with information should contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety or Silent Observer.
