KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The Kalamazoo County Board will hold a special meeting tomorrow night to save public health funding for the County, despite threats of violence aimed at commissioners. It’s in reaction to a Senate Budget bill that could strip any county of all state health funding next year if the local Health Director has imposed COVID-19 mandates.
Kalamazoo has a mask mandate for elementary students. Commissioner Mike Quinn says he thinks it’s just a Republican effort to undercut health mandates and stir up their constituents.
“This Senate Bill 82 is really legislative mischief. The misinformation that’s being propagated by a small but vocal fragment in this state is really dangerous.”
Several Kalamazoo County Commissioners say the controversy over mask mandates has made them fearful for their safety at times. Jen Strebs, Tracy Hall, & Monteze Morales said they have all received threats of violence.
If the bill is not vetoed, the County would take a vote to protect funding tomorrow night. If Governor Whitmer issues a veto, the matter is moot and the special County meeting will be canceled.
