KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The ongoing bus driver shortage in Kalamazoo and beyond caused more Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) bus routes to be canceled Wednesday.
A list of those routes was posted to the KPS Facebook page on Tuesday night, which can be viewed below:
The district has already warned parents that the shortage of drivers may cause sudden cancellations, meaning parents would have to provide their own transportation for students.
Officials would attempt to notify those in the affected routes the evening before, but that some routes could be canceled with little to no notice if the shortage gets worse.
KPS also said that they would try to limit these cancellations to once a week, but they have already proven to occur more often than that. For example, on Tuesday, four other routes were canceled for the day, as well.
“In anticipation of possible bus cancellations, families should have an alternate transportation plan,” Superintendent Dr. Rita Raichoudhuri said previously.
Although the district has recently hired at least six new drivers, more are needed to help curb any further disruptions.
Dr. Raichoudhuri says KPS offers better benefits, and offer more hours than neighboring districts. Drivers are also paid during training for the position.
