More growers of specialty and organic crops are buying crop insurance.
The Risk Management Agency recently reported on specialty crops, organic crops, local food production and greenhouse production which highlighted insurance option improvements, some of which were put in place by the 2018 Farm Bill while others resulted from producer feedback and research. From 2010 to 2020 the number of policies more than doubled. The Risk Management Agency and third-party groups also continue to refine existing policies and create new ones when there are gaps in coverage.
New options such as options for hemp – and a timely one, Hurricane Insurance Protection – are now possible to acquire.
