The pork industry was working with customs and border protection and USDA well before the identification of African Swine Fever last month in the Dominican Republic.
That’s according to Liz Wagstrom with the National Pork Producers Council who says one big concern is potential contamination of feed ingredients. The pork industry is working with the feed industry and USDA to prevent this method of disease transmission by setting up protocols asking importers of feed ingredients to implement holding times to allow any contamination to become inactivated.
Wagstrom says there’s also increased emphasis right now on making sure domestic producers are even more aware of the importance of biosecurity. With AFS on the doorstop, security is certain to ramp up even more in coming months.
