HARTFORD, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Officials with the Michigan State Police (MSP) reported Tuesday afternoon that a trooper shot an unleashed dog in Hartford after it attacked a canine unit.
Just before 10 a.m., an MSP canine handler was conducting an accelerant search while investigating the scene of a possible arson at a residence.
That’s when an unleashed dog appeared and attacked the canine unit.
Police say the handler was unable to stop the attacking dog and used his firearm, striking and killing the attacking dog.
The 4.5-year-old canine was taken to the Michigan State University Veterinary Clinic where he is being treated for his injuries. As last reported, the canine is in stable condition.
Neither the trooper nor any citizen was injured.
The incident remains under investigation.
