COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A fiery crash that shut down I-94 in Kalamazoo County Thursday for several hours left two injured and uncovered a large number of illegal drugs and weapons.
Michigan State Police Troopers responded to the freeway near Sprinkle Rd. in Comstock Township around 10:00 a.m.. An eastbound SUV had rear-ended a semi-truck and burst into flames at mile marker 83.
Responding fire officials were able to extinguish the flames quickly but one of two occupants, both from northern Michigan, had to be extricated from the SUV. The semi-truck driver was not injured.
During an investigation, it was determined that drug use was a likely factor in the crash. A search of the SUV uncovered suspected meth, heroin, and drug paraphernalia. Two unregistered firearms and ammunition were also found.
The driver was identified as 21-year-old James Brumfield of Traverse City and the passenger, 25-year-old Vincent Kelley of Wexford County. Charges have not been filed as prosecutors review the case.
The crash shut down that area of I-94 for nearly three hours.
