LANSING MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The American Heart Association of Michigan is reminding parents to monitor the sugar intake of their children.
Sugary drinks represent the #1 source of sugar in a teenager’s diet, and younger children can feel the effects of too much sugar as well.
In addition to tooth decay, excessive amounts of sugar can lead to medical complications down the road, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and Type 2 Diabetes.
The AHA recommends that children two years and older should not consume more than one 8-ounce sugary drink per week.
The AHA and Delta Dental Foundation remind parents that modeling good behavior, such as reducing the amount of sugary drinks that they consume, will help teach their children healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
