KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo officials are looking to purchase some available land in the city, now that they have the funding. They’re proposing buying the 14-acre site of the former State Department of Health and Human Services along Stockbridge Ave..
City Planning Director Rebekah Kik says they have no current plan for development, but would zone it for low-density residential and commercial buildings there.
“Having 14 acres come up for sale nearly in the center of our city is not something we should let just slide by.”
She says the neighbors in that area of town will have plenty of opportunities over the next year to give input on how it should be developed…
“What we’re hoping to do with engagement next summer would be able to have in-person meetings or open houses, hopefully on site.”
Commissioners will consider making an offer at their next meeting, but environmental testing and engineering assessments will have to be conducted before the sale is closed. They would use $2-million from the Foundation for Excellence to make the purchase.
