KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A report by an independent company that investigated the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety’s response to several protests and unrest in the city last year is expected to be released later this week. A special joint meeting on the matter will also be held a week from today at 6:00 p.m..
Consulting firm OIR Group out of California was hired in November to look at several specific incidents in Kalamazoo including police response to a peaceful protest on May 30, 2020, vandalism on the night of June 1 into June 2, and another peaceful protest in the evening of June 2. Another incident investigated was the KDPS response to an August 15 rally by Proud Boys that eventually led to a clash with counter-protesters and turned violent.
OIR held several virtual listening sessions earlier this year to get input from Kalamazoo residents. Next Tuesday’s meeting will be held virtually and streamed on the City of Kalamazoo’s Facebook and YouTube pages.
