KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Voters will go to the polls Tuesday for the August 3 primary election, and there are two items that will be decided on in Kalamazoo County.
Portage Public Schools –
Voters will be asked to consider a bond issue that would replace five aging elementary schools in Portage and renovate another, purchase new fuel-efficient buses and update technology.
The schools slated for replacement are Angling Road, Amberly, Central Elementary, Haverhill and Woodland, with renovations planned for Moorsbridge.
Because an old bond will be retired this year, it means that if approved, the new bond will not mean a tax hike.
“We’re fortunate to be in a very good financial situation in the district,” Superintendent Mark Bielang Bielang said previously. “This is huge that you can do this amount of work with no increase to the existing debt. We’re very fortunate to be in that position.”
In total, the proposal is a $175.7 million dollar request.
Charleston Township Roads –
Voters in Charleston Township will be asked whether or not to approve a $0.75 millage for public road maintenance and improvement.
Ballot language says that should this measure be approved, an estimated $79,233.61 would be raised in the first year the millage is levied.
