KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — It’s been the summer of bugs in southwest Michigan ever since a severe drought quickly turned around to heavy rain and flooding. And there’s another one that’s thriving in these weather conditions. Ticks.
The Centers for Disease Control says wearing a long-sleeved shirt offers protection from the tiny arachnids as it does from the ever-present mosquitoes. Ticks carry a soup of pathogens and microbes in addition to that with which they’re most often associated, Lyme disease.
This spring’s survey indicates all counties in southwest Michigan, except Branch County, reporting at least two cases of the illness. Finally, remember to check children and pets for the tiny creatures when they’ve been playing outside.
