FLORENCE TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that one man has died after a crash involving a motorcycle.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, when deputies were called to Lutz Road near Dickinson Road in Florence Township.
Police say a Ford F-150 was Southbound on Lutz Road attempting to make a turn at Dickinson Road. A Yamaha motorcycle was also Southbound on Lutz Road behind the pickup.
It was reported the pickup changed the direction it was turning and a collision occurred as the motorcycle attempted to overtake the pickup. The driver of the motorcycle was thrown off his vehicle, and the motorcycle went off the southwest corner of the intersection and struck a power pole.
The driver of the motorcycle was 47-year-old Florin Gavril Olarean from Sturgis, and he suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
Olarean was also determined to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver of the pickup was identified as a 17-year-old male from Burr Oak, MI.
There was only one minor injury reported to a passenger in the pickup.
Once the crash investigation is finished, police say the case will be forwarded to the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
Drugs, alcohol, and speed do not appear to be factors in the crash.
