UNION CITY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An electrical explosion in Union City caused a fire and major damage to a substation and left the entire village without power for almost nine hours Tuesday. It happened at around 1:30 p.m. at the substation on Coldwater Road.
The explosion took out the main switchgear for the electrical system causing the entire grid to go down. The fire was put out in about an hour. The cause has not been determined but village officials do not believe any foul play was involved.
Several crew members and a guest were in the building when the explosion took place but no one was hurt. Two responding firefighters did have some minor injuries while fighting the fire.
Over the next few days, Union City crews will be working on repairs that will require occasional power outages.
