PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – For the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, masks will be optional in the Portage Public School district.
The district made the announcement on Monday. A statement released on Facebook reads as follows:
“The current plan is to allow for masks to be optional for the 2021-22 school year. If the situation changes, we will adjust, as we have throughout the past year.
We will adjust our protocols to follow any forthcoming federal, state and local requirements. The situation with variants and vaccination levels remains very fluid.
We will continue to work closely with the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department to monitor and respond to any changes.
We will communicate any changes regarding our health and safety plans ASAP.”
Elsewhere in Kalamazoo County, Kalamazoo Public Schools have already decided everyone will be wearing masks when classes begin this fall. Those who are not vaccinated will also be masking up at Western Michigan University.
Additionally, mask requirements have been dropped at Mattawan Consolidated Schools, but remain optional.
