KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo County Commissioners plan to resume face to face meetings in early August, but Kalamazoo City Commissioners have delayed a decision on the question.
City Staff had recommended they end their zoom meetings in two weeks, but at a virtual meeting Tuesday, Commissioners said they aren’t ready.
Vice Mayor Patrese Griffin and Commissioner Erin Knott wonder what the plans are for their advisory boards, and say there are still concerns about safety.
“Whether that be because they don’t feel safe showing up, or because they have have families and lives and so on and can’t be here,” Vice Mayor Griffin said.
Knott raised similar concerns.
“We know COVID is unpredictable, and vaccination rates have completely stalled,” Knott said.
For Commissioner Chris Preadel, the concerns are personal.
“I have three young boys at home, all under age six,” Praedel said. “They can’t be vaccinated, and with the Delta variant, I’m very concerned about that.”
Both Boards are talking about holding hybrid meetings that combine face to face sessions with some remote participation, including accepting public comment by phone.
City Commissioners will take up the discussion again in two weeks at the next Committee of the Whole meeting.
