KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Tuesday, the Kalamazoo County Government provided an update on the construction of the new Downtown Kalamazoo Justice Facility.
This comes after the Board of Commissioners authorized Construction Manager CSM to move forward with awarding contracts for the work last April.
Groundbreaking for the project occurred late last May.
The project, which totals over $90 million, will be located next to the County’s Administration Building on Kalamazoo Avenue, across the street from the Park Trade Center.
On Tuesday, county officials provided the following update on the construction progress:
“As construction on the new Kalamazoo County Downtown Justice Facility ramps up, we keep our promise of being good stewards of our community. This five-story, 165,000-square-foot facility will contain a roof specially designed to help regulate solar heat. The Downtown Justice Facility focuses on economic and environmental progression.
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Kalamazoo County hard, but this project will provide a critical boost for our economy by creating local jobs, streamlining the county’s criminal justice system, and saving our taxpayers money with operational efficiencies. We emphasized transparency within our criminal justice system, and the Downtown Justice Facility glass design creates an opportunity for the public to see justice at work.
This facility will house courtrooms accessible through Zoom and IT rooms that can broadcast a video Livestream of high-profile cases to a nearby conference room available for news media covering proceedings.”
Meanwhile, the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners will hold its first meeting of the month tonight at 7 p.m.
Viewers can stream the meeting online via Zoom or online through the Public Media Network Civic channel.
