SCHOOLCRAFT TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A suspect who was being chased by Michigan State Police Troopers in a stolen vehicle managed to escape capture in Kalamazoo County Wednesday night. It started in Van Buren County and spanned through Cass County and then ended at the Speedway gas station on Grand St. near Schoolcraft.
The suspect fled on foot and escaped into a wooded area. A K-9 unit and drone were used to try and locate the suspect, but they lost track of him. A bag that contained a large amount of cash was recovered as well as the vehicle, a 2021 Range Rover truck that had a loaded gun in it. It had been stolen out of Pennsylvania.
The suspect is identified as 24-year-old Khalid Bates. He’s described as an African American, 5’10”, 180 pounds with ties to the Detroit area. He was last seen running south from the Speedway with black pants and a dark blue long-sleeve shirt.
Felony Flee & Eluding, Possession of Stolen Property, and Resisting & Obstructing Police Officers are some of the charges that will be sought against Bates. Anyone with information about the suspect and/or his whereabouts is asked to call 911 or the MSP Paw Paw Post at 269-657-5551.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by Van Buren County Sheriff Department and Great Lakes Drone Recovery.
