FLORENCE TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Sheriff’s deputies in St. Joseph County were involved in a chase earlier this week that ventured from Michigan into Indiana and ended when the suspect crashed his vehicle.
On Sunday evening, deputies responded to a call about gunshots being fired at around 10:45. They observed a suspicious vehicle leaving the area near Constantine and Withers roads in Florence Township. After trying to stop the vehicle, the driver took off at high speeds.
The vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle on U.S. 131 near Withers Rd. A 41-year-old female suffered minor injuries in the accident. The vehicle continued to flee and used his vehicle to ram a deputy’s patrol car. He also threw numerous items out of a window in an attempt to hit the pursuing patrol vehicles.
The pursuit went through Constantine and Mottville Townships before it entered Elkhart County. The suspect struck a mailbox and drove through a residential yard before crashing into a fence which ended the pursuit. The suspect fled from the vehicle running through the yard and into a field.
Deputies apprehended the suspect in the field. He was found to be in possession of methamphetamine and identified as a 32-year-old man from Constantine. The suspect was lodged at the Elkhart County Jail for charges in Indiana. Additional charges related to the pursuit and drug possession are being requested in St. Joseph County.
