KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo Public Schools (KPS) have unveiled a three-year strategy meant to reverse the impacts of the pandemic on student learning.
Superintendent Rita Raichoudhuri fleshed out the KPS Accelerated Plan for Trustees on Tuesday.
The four main goals of the program will be to work on the well-being of students and their families, carefully monitor and assess progress, make sure they are doing it equitably, and leverage community partnerships, because it will take all hands on deck.
“The district recognizes that it takes a village to raise our children,” Raichoudhuri said. “The Kalamazoo community continues to work closely with the district to meet the needs of students. These partnerships will continue to grow and expand related to the needs that we see for children as they learn and grow.”
A 26-page description of the complete plan, including a detailed breakdown and citations of all the studies referenced, is available on the KPS website.
In part, the description reads as follows:
“The initiatives being brought forward into the 2021-2022 school year are research-based and open-ended for additional items. Digital learning platforms, virtual parent-teacher conferences, educator and student ed-tech skills, personal safety measures and much more will be utilized as the district continues to serve children. The plan is a three-year plan with some initiatives starting in the Fall of 2021 and others starting at a later date. With our commitment to continuous improvement, we will evaluate the impact of the KPS Acceleration Plan at strategic intervals. Students and staff will continue to learn with an increased use of technology and support.”

Meanwhile, school staff will be busy over the next two months preparing for the return to classes in the fall, while also creating a separate curriculum for the 523 students who have opted to remain virtual.
