KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting is calling for legislation that would make it a felony to improperly store a gun resulting in the injury or death of a child. It comes after 9-year-old Carl Atkins of Kalamazoo was fatally shot last week while home alone with other children.
“People should be allowed to own guns, but with that comes a responsibility.”
Getting says legislation like this could help prevent more unnecessary deaths…
“If that gun isn’t left loaded in a place accessible to a 9-year-old child, then this doesn’t happen. But it does happen. And it happens again and again and again.”
It’s still unclear who owns the gun that killed Atkins as well as who shot him.
