KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Saturday storms brought with them heavy rain, wind, some flooding, along with suspected tornadic activity in West Michigan.
In Ionia and Mecosta Counties storms caused widespread damage scattering debris across roadways, taking down several trees and hurling them and their branches onto homes and vehicles.
Radar activity indicated a brief suspected tornado on the ground near the village of Remus in Mecosta County around 3:45 p.m. with another northwest of Lake Odessa in Ionia County about an hour later with winds up to 110 miles per hour.
While the damage was extensive, authorities were happy to report no serious injuries resulting from the storms.
In Kalamazoo County, heavy rains caused flooding in areas of the city of Kalamazoo, specifically in the Vine and Eastside neighborhoods.
Sandbags were made available to residents to pick up to prevent damage from possible flooding. They were available at 1330 Portage Street in the west parking lot behind Washington Square.
The storms also caused power outages and brought with them some downed powerlines. Authorities are reminding residents to stay at least 25 feet away should they see them, treat them like they are live, and report them by calling 911.
