We underscore frequently the importance of pollinators to our food supply.
Another opportunity to do that comes this week with its proclamation of being National Pollinator Week. Pollinator species play a key role in producing over 100 crops grown in this country. USDA in making the proclamation offered ideas on how to protect this vital part of the food chain. They include growing pollinator-attractive flowering trees and plants that also sequester carbon.
Honeybee pollination alone adds over $18 billion in value to crops every year. The Department of Agriculture supports their health through research, data collections, monitoring and health grants.
