PLAINWELL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A volunteer organization is offering free home repairs in Plainwell to residents who qualify.
The organization, TeenServe, says as many as 70 local residents will benefit from the work.
The project includes a projected 300 adult and teenage volunteers at a work camp in Plainwell, which will take place from June 27 to July 3. There have already been 57 camps like these in 42 locations across multiple states.
Officials say that to date, work on more than 2,422 homes has been conducted.
At each work camp, teenagers and adults volunteer a week of their time to repair homes throughout the community.
For this project, the work camp will be housed at Plainwell High School, with participants sleeping on classroom floors, eating in the cafeteria and enjoying evening programs in the gym, according to an official release.
“This service to the community would be impossible without the wonderful cooperation of Plainwell Community Schools,” Plainwell TeenServe 2021 Director Jayley Streeter said in a statement.
Streeter also spoke with WKZO on Monday morning about this project, including some of the positions available. Some of those include serving meals at different times, photo guides and more.
“There are lots of different ways you can get involved with TeenServe,” Streeter said. “If anyone is interested, they can email teenserve2020@gmail.com, and then we’ll send them back an application and confirm the time they’re available. It’s just so good to get involved, and I’d love to see more people joining in on this, because the more the better.”
Repairs offered through the work camp include interior and exterior painting, weatherization and wheelchair ramp construction.
Homeowners with physical and financial needs are encouraged to apply to be a worksite. TeenServe will complete work on homes within a 25-mile radius of Plainwell High School.
Residents interested in applying to receive assistance may call (800)-596-FIXUP or (800)-596-3498.
