KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — When you think fireworks, you think of the 4th of July. Some Kalamazoo City Commissioners think it’s only fair that fireworks should also be allowed on the nation’s newest holiday… Juneteenth.
The first official celebration was held over the weekend. City Attorney Clyde Robinson says State Law allows the use of fireworks on 12 specific days per year, mainly weekend holidays and one extra day if the 4th of July is also on a weekend.
“The 19th of June being a floating holiday, under Michigan law the third Saturday in June is the celebration of Juneteenth. Which you could say (allow the) fireworks on that day.”
Mayor Dave Anderson says it may not have been permitted, but it did not stop folks near Woodward Elementary from celebrating with skyrockets Saturday night.
Commissioners have not yet made a decision on the matter, but they expect to by the Juneteenth holiday in 2022.
