KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Monday, local hunger relief program Feed the Fight Kalamazoo announced that it will be delivering its final round of meals to medical workers this week.
The program originally launched last year as a means of feeding frontline healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. When the program began, 800 meals were delivered in one week.
Through Feed the Fight Kalamazoo, community members donate money which is used to purchase meals from local restaurants, and then the food is delivered to healthcare workers and first responders.
On Monday, officials with the program announced that this week will mark the final round of deliveries. That comes after $100,000 donated from the community, and nearly 10,000 meals delivered to workers.
Officials provided the following statement:
“On Friday, Michigan announced 162 new Covid cases, mirroring the low case rates experienced last June. Vaccinations are on the rise and pandemic restrictions are to lift on Tuesday. Feed the Fight Kalamazoo was founded to provide an avenue for community members to ‘do something’ to support our frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic – giving money, volunteering their time to deliver meals, sharing our messages, creating our posters, scheduling restaurants to order meals from, and so much more.
The time has come to say thank you and farewell! We would also like to thank Colleagues International (soon to be known as Global Ties Kalamazoo), our fiscal sponsor, for supporting this project from its creation in April 2020 throughout the past year.”
The final figures of the program were also provided, and can be viewed as follows:
-
9,941 meals delivered
-
271 deliveries from individual restaurants
-
107 local restaurants where meals were purchased from
-
1 healthcare hero award from the Family Health Center
-
Over 350 individual donations
-
Dozens of volunteers
-
More than a thousand healthcare workers fed and supported in the community
There are six additional deliveries coming up this week on Wednesday and Thursday.
On Wednesday, volunteers will deliver meals from Huey D’s Goodies and Layla’s Cool Pops to the Family Health Center.
On Thursday, volunteers will deliver food from Special Cheesecake and Dessert Co. to Bronson Hospital.
