KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An abandoned two-story structure near a homeless encampment in Kalamazoo was destroyed in a fire early Sunday morning. Fire officials were called to 20 Mills St. at around 4:30.
Heavy smoke and flames were pouring out of both floors of the brick building and firefighters were unable to get to the interior. The fire was brought under control in about 45 minutes. Due to the proximity to the homeless encampment, thermal imaging was used to detect any potential victims. It was determined that no one was inside. Crews remained on the scene for several hours to put out hotspots.
The cause of the fire is still being determined. Anyone with information should contact the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety or Silent Observer.
