KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The build-up of sludge and sediment in the Kalamazoo River has become so widespread that it can actually be seen from space. Updated Google Earth images faintly show the massive deposits along the river in Comstock Township, downtown Kalamazoo and Parchment.
Eagle Creek Renewable Energy, the company that owns the Morrow Lake dam and is responsible for the mess which has devastated the ecosystem, wildlife, and recreation on parts of the river, is supposedly going to get moving faster on cleanup. The company says it will accelerate dredging efforts in the Kalamazoo River with two projects. One is just downstream from the dam in Comstock Township and the other near the Kings Highway bridge in Kalamazoo. The company also will be mapping 30 miles of river between Parchment and Lake Allegan to log additional deposits.
To date, Eagle Creek has removed about 2,000 cubic yards of an estimated 369,000 cubic yards that were allowed to be released downstream. It happened in late 2019 when the dam spillway gates were lowered for a repair project.
