KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A phone scam that has been around for a couple of years is now apparently victimizing residents in the Kalamazoo Area.
County Board Chair Tracy Hall says sophisticated scam artists are calling people and telling them if they don’t pay a fine immediately, they will be arrested for missing Jury Duty.
During a virtual meeting Tuesday night, Hall reminded residents that courts don’t function this way.
“County Jury services will never contact you by phone requiring you to pay a fine for failing to appear for jury service,” Hall said.
She says its personal for her, as it happened to two friends who were taken for a lot of money.
“If you receive such a call, or a call asking you to meet a deputy to pay a fine, you should contact your local law enforcement or contact jury services,” Hall said.
She says the con artists will use the names of local law authorities and have a police scanner in the background to make the call seem more authentic.
The scam first surfaced two years ago following news reports that some counties were cracking down on citizens who dodged jury duty.
