KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s response to drivers speeding on streets around the city has been to beef up traffic patrols and install speed bumps. City officials may be stepping it up in more areas of the city soon. Public Safety Chief Vernon Coakley says speeding is the number one complaint they get from neighborhood associations. He says all of the city’s police officers are ready to issue citations.
“There’s an expectation to those public safety officers to make sure our community is safe.”
Public Works Director Jim Baker says they want to know what is causing the behavior in the different neighborhoods before they recommend tailored solutions.
“You don’t drive 70 mph up Park Street because you didn’t know what the speed limit was. These are deliberate behaviors and we need to work with the community to get these things resolved.”
Currently, they are doing studies on the east side of the city to determine what may work there.
