World Pork Expo was back to an in-person event this year and offered the opportunity of showcasing the latest developments in the nation’s pork industry.
While a federal district court ruling striking down faster harvest facility line speeds gained the most attention at the three-day event in Des Moines this time around, there were other issues on the mind of attendees. One of them is a challenge to California’s Proposition 12 which imposes arbitrary animal housing standards reaching far outside the state’s borders.
Also, Expo 2021 saw interest in expanding export markets, labor reform and prevention of introduction of foreign animal diseases. World Pork Expo was cancelled last year due to the pandemic and in 2019 over African swine fever concerns.
