KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo’s Mayor is calling for a concerted community-wide effort to tackle the issue of gun violence, by going after the root causes.
It follows the shooting of a resident holding a baby last Friday, which happened on Gun Violence Awareness Day.
“I guess we can celebrate that the baby did not die? Presume a few inches made the difference there? Or that the young person didn’t sustain mortal injury.”
Mayor Dave Anderson says just handling the medical emergencies and investigating the crimes is not enough. They have to do the things that will prevent such crimes from happening in the first place.
“A long list of things have gotten us to this point. And it’s a long list of things that need to be addressed in a comprehensive manner over what is going to take years. Whether you are a non-profit, a business, a large business in Kalamazoo, or community organizers, we need to come together.”
He says he has already begun conversations with community groups, and some organizations are already working separately on the community issues that may result in gun violence.
