KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) announced Tuesday that the public should expect delays on anticipated construction projects this year.
Officials say that a notable example for the 2021 season is Nichols Road and Solon Street located between Ravine Road and the City of Kalamazoo Limits.
Officials said that particular project not only involves coordination between at least six agencies in the public right-of-way, but there are expected material delays due to global supply chain issues.
Nichols Road was initially expected to be done by August 31, but the final completion date will depend on when material arrives. With that in mind, the project may be finished as late as November 2021.
A substantial amount of work viewed will still be completed around the August/September timeframe, but the traffic signal work will not, officials said. The road will be reopened for traffic when the road work is completed and will not be delayed by the traffic signal work.
Much like other materials, officials say steel mast arms for the traffic signals are experiencing a significant delay.
An updated timeline can be viewed below:
In addition to the steel mast arms utilized for traffic signals, the following delays and shortages are impacting RCKC general road construction and maintenance operations:
- Culverts
- Paint/Pavement Markings
- Dust Control
- Labor/Commercial Driver License
- Equipment
RCKC officials say the infrastructure work will still continue, though potentially on a different timeline than expected.
