KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Northside Ministerial Alliance will be hosting a community anti-violence demonstration Tuesday evening.
Dr. Addis Moore, President of the Northside Ministerial Alliance and the Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, says the goal is to have at least 200 to 1,000 men show up to the demonstration, which will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at 6 p.m.
“Men will be gathering as a visible demonstration of unity against violence, and this behavior will not be tolerated in our community,” a release reads in part.
This comes as Kalamazoo is experiencing an uptick in shootings, with the most recent being last Friday.
During a virtual city meeting Monday night, Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson talked about recent gun violence, saying the city is experiencing a crisis.
“We do have a crisis which is unequally affecting some neighborhoods and some folks more in the City of Kalamazoo,” Anderson said. “It is most certainly the case that there are long lists of things that have gotten us to this point, and it’s a long list of things that need to be addressed in a comprehensive manner over unfortunately, what is going to take years.”
Anderson says one of the things that needs to be done is a community-driven effort to help curb gun violence, as well as activities by the city, mentioning Tuesday’s event by Mt. Zion.
“I do see that a call went out from Mt. Zion, asking for volunteers to show up to participate on the community side of things,” Anderson said. “But I am asking, across the board, whether you are a nonprofit or a business in Kalamazoo, community organizers, that we come together to make sure that we bring that community effort to addressing all the various components of what is leading to this situation that we’re finding ourselves in.”
Mt. Zion Baptist Church is located at 120 Roberson St, Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
One of WKZO’s sister stations, WTOU The Touch, will be broadcasting the event live starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday night. Listeners can tune in at 95.5 FM and 1560 AM.
