KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo County will break ground on their new $97-million dollar Courthouse on Wednesday, but there is another major local public works project ahead.
Tonight, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will host a session on the $69-million cleanup at the Allied Paper landfill. Bulldozers will arrive at the site between the Edison and Westnedge Hill Neighborhoods next month.
The fenced off area has been the target of hearings, lawsuits, and even protests for decades.
The clean-up costs at the dump will be covered by those responsible for the pollution. The current owners of the site, the Lyondell Environmental Custodial Trust, will be conducting the cleanup with EPA oversight.
This year’s activity will require heavy equipment entering and exiting the worksite and expects to last through early winter. EPA and the trust will work with the city of Kalamazoo to manage traffic entering and leaving the site.
Tonight’s virtual question and answer live stream begins at 7:00 p.m. and will be carried on the City of Kalamazoo’s YouTube and Facebook pages.
