KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — 12 to 15-year-olds will be able to get COVID-19 vaccines soon. Kalamazoo County Health Director Jim Rutherford says now that the CDC has formulated guidelines for administering the vaccine for adolescents, parents can already begin getting them signed up.
“Great news with the 12 to 15-year-olds. (We’re) very excited to be able to start reaching that population as well.”
He says they already have already made strides getting older teens to their clinics, with 38% already inoculated.
“We’re) probably in the top two or three counties in the state of Michigan, so we’ve had great luck reaching this age group. Hopefully, we will continue to have great luck reaching the 12 to 15-year-olds.”
Bronson Healthcare will be hosting a vaccination clinic specifically for those 12 to 17 years old this Sunday in Portage. The announcement comes following yesterday’s approval by the CDC to begin vaccinating that age group. Teens will need to get parental permission to get a shot. Rutherford says they prefer it when parents bring their children to clinics.
“There’s a lot more anxiety. There’s a lot more fear. SO, it’s always helpful to have familiar people there.”
Vaccinations are by appointment only. All 12 to 17-year-old residents will be eligible and do not need to be a Bronson patient. The clinic will take place this Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
