GALESBURG, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A 12-year-old Galesburg boy is in critical condition after he was shot in the head with a BB gun, according to a report from WOOD TV Tuesday.
According to the report, 12-year-old Deven Free was playing with BB guns along with two other boys Monday afternoon. After a certain time, one of them alerted family members that Deven had been shot and injured.
Family members say he was able to speak at first, but was later unresponsive. He is currently under intensive care at Bronson Children’s Hospital with the BB lodged in his brain.
Deven’s great aunt, Lisa Shirley, spoke with WOOD TV on his condition.
“He may or may not ever walk, talk or come off the ventilator,” Shirley said.
She added that there has been a large community response, with support through constant calls and messages.
In a statement released from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, officials confirmed that the matter is being investigated. They said that the shooting appears to be accidental, according to WOOD TV.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has been set up by Deven’s family for medical costs and other expenses. The campaign can be viewed at this link.
