KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Municipal leaders across the country and locally are watching what happens as the Derek Chauvin murder trial into the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis may soon have a verdict.
Last year, his death sparked protests across the nation, including in Kalamazoo where damage was done to several local businesses. Local leaders keeping an eye on things include City Commissioner Eric Cunningham, who wants those who have held recent protests, that have remained peaceful, to keep positively engaging with local leaders and law enforcement.
“I just want to encourage individuals in our community to continue to communicate, continue to love, to stay encouraged, and be safe.”
The jury in Minneapolis heard final arguments Monday and have been sequestered while they consider murder and manslaughter charges against the former police officer.
